A cubic yard is the volume of a cube that measures one yard, or three feet, on each side. Because volume multiplies three dimensions, one cubic yard holds 3 × 3 × 3 = 27 cubic feet. That makes converting cubic yards to cubic feet a single multiplication by 27, and converting cubic feet back to cubic yards a division by 27. The common mistake is to multiply by 3, which applies only to straight-line yards and feet, not to volume.

One cubic yard of any material, whether gravel, mulch, soil or concrete, is 27 cubic feet. The material changes the weight of a yard, not its volume.
It takes 13.5 bags of 2 cubic feet to make one cubic yard (27 ÷ 2). With 1.5 cubic foot bags it takes 18, and with 3 cubic foot bags it takes 9.
Divide cubic feet by 27. For example, 50 cubic feet ÷ 27 = 1.85 cubic yards.
A yard is 3 feet long, but a cubic yard has length, width and height. Multiplying 3 ft × 3 ft × 3 ft gives 27 cubic feet.
A typical contractor wheelbarrow holds about 6 cubic feet when moderately full, so a cubic yard is roughly 4 to 5 loads. Check the capacity stamped on your wheelbarrow and divide 27 by that number.
Half a cubic yard is 13.5 cubic feet, and a quarter yard is 6.75 cubic feet.
