How to Estimate Fence Posts

For a straight fence run, divide the total fence length by the post spacing to estimate the number of sections. Then add one post.

Formula: fence length ÷ post spacing = sections

Posts: sections + 1

Example: 120 feet ÷ 8 feet = 15 sections, so you need about 16 posts for a straight run.

Common Fence Post Spacing

Post Spacing Common Use
6 ftShorter spacing or heavier fence sections
8 ftCommon spacing for many wood fences
10 ftSome lighter-duty or specialty applications

Fence Length FAQ

How do I calculate fence posts?

Does this include gate posts?

No. Gates usually require additional posts, so add those separately.

Should I add extra posts?
