The mile, used on US and UK roads, is defined as exactly 1.609344 kilometers, while the kilometer, 1,000 meters, is the standard distance unit in most other countries. To convert miles to km, multiply by about 1.609. To go from kilometers to miles, divide by the same number, or multiply by about 0.621. A kilometer is therefore a bit more than six tenths of a mile.
